‘The Rhino Crows at Dawn.’ © 2013 Hot Breakfast. All Rights Reserved. Patent Pending.

You guys are amazing. Seriously.

A little while ago, we asked for your help to get Hot Breakfast! nominated for the Seventh Annual 93.7 WSTW HOMEY AWARDS. The Awards are sponsored by Hometown Heroes, that wonderful show hosted by Mark C. Rogers that features music and in-studio performances by local artists. The first round of voting determined the final nominees in each category.

Thanks to all of our fans, our friends, and those who love and support local music, your pals Hot Breakfast! have been officially nominated for THREE Homey Awards!

  • EP of the Year (“Hot Breakfast!”)
  • Best Lead Singer (Jill “Breakfast!” Knapp)
  • Best Live Band

And not only that, but many of our favorite artists, from The Joe Trainor Trio to The Honey Badgers to Glim Dropper and many, many more have been nominated as well! You can check out the whole list by clicking here (yes, it’s a Facebook page, but you don’t have to be logged in to Facebook to see it, even though let’s face it, you probably are).

We are honored and delighted to be in such a crowd. The Delaware music scene is as vibrant and vital as ever, and it’s a thrill to be a part of it all.

The Awards Ceremony will be at World Cafe Live at the Queen on Friday, March 8, 2013. The Homeys have their own band of voters for this one, so we’re not asking you to do a thing – except to sit back, relax, and be proud for supporting local musicians and artists.

We’ve got great shows coming up, a full-length CD in production, and all kinds of great plans in the works. And none of it means a thing without you.

We cannot thank you enough. But that doesn’t mean we won’t try. We even wrote you a song.

Love,
Matt & Jill

GIG: COMEDY ROCKS! 10/25 at 7:30pm, World Cafe Live at the Queen

The fine folks at Gable Music Ventures approached us at an open mic night a few months back, and suggested we once again join forces with musical funnyman Todd Chappelle and a standup comedian for a show at The Queen. We jumped on board, and were soon told that the lovely and talented stand-up comedian Ms. Shari Short would be our emcee for the evening. Shari is farking hilarious– we had a private performance the other night and just fell in love.

The show is scheduled for Thursday, October 25th, and it’s at 7:30pm. (Yes, really! Midweek shows start earlier sometimes, and this is one of those times.)

Todd will sing his signature funny songs, we’ll be leaning on our dorkier material (and we’ve got a new song to debut!), and Shari will perform stand-up between our sets. And you will laugh. And eat. And drink. And drink some more… which will make you laugh some more.

And you will also wish Brian a happy birthday, since he is the world’s first Cool Little Brother (CLBs are official fans of Hot Breakfast!) and he pulls rank.

DEETS:

WHO: Hot Breakfast!, Todd Chappelle, and Shari Short doing things to make you snicker
WHEN: Thursday, October 25th starting at 7:30
TICKETS: $10– cheap! Buy them here, or at the door.
AGES: All ages.
FOOD: Full tasty menu and good drinks.
PARKING: Street parking, and there’s also a lot on 5th between King and Market for cheap.

GIG: October 6th: Top secret show that we can’t advertise…

Yes yes, we blogged about this top-secret gig before, but I’m really excited about it, so I needed to talk about it more… and also bring the new folks up to speed in case they haven’t scrolled back far enough in the blog to hear the story.

So, we’re in this quandary.

We’ve been asked to open up for one of our favorite artists ever… and this artist is pretty dang famous.
But this is, contractually, a 100% non-advertised gig for the artist we’re opening for, and therefore, us as well.

So we’re not allowed to tell you about it.

And we were only given a few tickets for it since it’s a semi-private affair.
I mean, it’s being held at a public place, but you can only buy tickets if you know about the show.

But we’re not allowed to tell you about the show because it’s private.

BUT WE REALLY WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT IT because it is such a GIANT HONOR to open for this artist!

Yes, we are intentionally being ambiguous about this artist’s gender. And we’re not being entire truthful by using the word “artist” because that sort of implies that it is only one person. But you get the idea.

We were given a very small number of tickets to sell for this show, and they were all offered to our most loyal Cool Little Brothers and immediately snatched up. So it’s kinda silly us even typing up this blog post here, but we wanted you to know that we’re just really so excited and honored to be playing this gig. So, if you’re in the know, make sure you’re there on time… 8PM. We’ll see you there.

Your pal,

Ji11

Our new EP is here!

Ladies and Germs (and Brian),

We would like to be the first to tell you that our new EP is here, and will be available for the first time EVER at our show tomorrow night at 1984. Brian Lintz, our Coolest of the Cool Little Brothers, gets the first one, so all 23,000 of you will have to WAIT IN LINE BEHIND BRIAN, got it?

We’ll also have ’em available at our set at the Ice Cream Festival this Sunday.

You can also purchase individual tracks or the entire album in a bundle by clicking the link at the top of this page here.

We’re really excited about this!

Here’s the track listing:
1. IT ONLY TAKES TWO TO ROCK – M. Casarino / J. Knapp – 5:05
2. DEFENDER – M. Casarino – 3:40
3. KISS OFF – G. Gano – 2:45
4. HOLE IN YOUR PANTS – M. Casarino – 2:35
5. YOU WERE A SPIDER – M. Casarino – 4:11
6. MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) – P. Schilling – 4:18

That’s copied/pasted right from the CD labeling software, yo. There’s no changing it now. Since it’s an EP, it doesn’t have a fancy title. If we wanna be pretentious we can say, “It’s our self-titled EP.”

Don’t see your favorite song? Don’t worry… the album-album is still in the works!

See everything you need? Well, er, OK… looks like you’re all set then.

Your pal,

Ji11

Back in the studio…

One of the nicest things about having a home studio is that we can really take our time with a recording since we’re not freaking out about the spendy engineer1. We can take our time, we can record at 3am if we want… whatever.

Of course, one of the bad things about having a home studio is that we are constantly dicking around with mixes, re-recording things, coming up with alternate versions of songs, adding floor-stomps or whatever, so the recording never feels like it’ll ever be finished. We have no deadline since the studio time is essentially free.

The only thing really pushing us to finish the CD is our desire to keep Brian and the rest of our Cool Little Brothers2 happy.

Anyway, this time around, we’ll be recording our new songs Maybe You Saw It Too, It Only Takes Two to Rock, and re-recording Defender. Speaking if Defender, here’s a video of us singing it in Kyle Cassidy’s living room, just after we put our clothes on.

Stay tuned for more updates from the studio. Our Twitter feed is probably the best place to look, because hey, instant gratification. (We’re also on instagram (we’re “hotbreakfast”), but we don’t use it all that much.)

Catch ya soon.

Your pal,

Ji11

Will Matt & Jill ever finish their new album? (also: GIG: March 10 @ 9pm, Film Bros, Wilmington)

Yes.

Yes, we will.

Thank you for your concern.

Seriously, we will. We’re all stocked up with recording equipment, we have a song list, and we even have a little time, for once. So you can rest assured that a new album by Hot Breakfast!, featuring originals (including some brand-new tunes you ain’t never heard, son) and some favorite covers, will be available for your listening entertainment in the near future.

Besides, we can’t let Brian and the rest of our Cool Little Brothers down. We owe ’em!

Until then…we’ve got gigs! Come on down to Wilmington on Saturday, March 10th as the [blank] canvas celebrates Woman’s Day with ARTemis…a weekend event of art and music that benefits Mom’s House! The Wilmington event actually starts on Friday night with a great concert at The Film Brothers Movie Co-op and continues into Saturday with some wonderful events for kids. It culminates in another concert on Saturday night, and that’s where we come in! We’ll be performing at Film Brothers at 205 Market Street, Wilmington. We go on at 9:00, but the show starts at 6:30 and features great local acts like Crossing Oceans, Deadlox, Mean Lady, 205, and Xtra Allta. Join us! Seriously, we’re totally nice.

You can also catch us in April in Philly and Wilmington, as we melt faces at Lickety Split and the Shubin Theater (Philly) and Extreme Pizza (Wilmington).

And our album will be released soon.

We promise.

Have we ever lied to you?

Your pal,

Matt

Looking for your socks? (plus, a set list)

photo (c) 2011 Joe del Tufo

For those of you who got to your cars last night and realized that your socks were gone, you can thank us for rocking them the hell off. To retrieve them, check with the Bellefonte Cafe staff; we left them in a plastic bag from Target– ask for Frank behind the bar.

Seriously… thanks so much to everyone who came to the show last night. We had a great time, and hearing y’all yell “HOT BREAKFAST!” and singing along makes it all worth while. We’re very lucky that we get to do what we do for appreciative people. So really, we owe you the thanks here.

Also: Woot! As of this writing we’re up to 135 people who like us on Facebook. WORLD DOMINATION IS IMMINENT, PEOPLE. Can you taste it? (We can, and it tastes sorta like the brunch we had at Hank’s this morning. Highly recommended.)

We’ve been getting requests for us to post our set list, so we’re gonna start doing that after each show. The tunes marked with an asterisk are our originals, written by our Hotness, Matt Casarino. Covers have their original artists noted in parentheses.

Last night our Founding CLB Brian asked us when our next gig is, because as of now all we have are private shows booked1. Have no fear, folks. We’ll be back at the Bellefonte Cafe soon enough, and we’ll also be playing at Between Books on an upcoming balmy Friday night. We also will be playing at open mic nights (granted, not a lot of bang for your buck there) at The Kennett Flash, World Cafe Life at the Queen, and Legendary Dobbs in Philly. We’re also talking to the people who book shows at Logan House, Mojo Main, and The Tin Angel. Stay tuned for details and dates! Don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging.

Also: If you’re interested in booking us for a house concert, let us know! We love those.

OK, that’s it for now.

It’s 11pm, and this rockstar has some leftover rice that isn’t gonna eat itself.

Your pal,

Jill

GIG: May 18th at the Blue Parrot (updated!)

Hey Ninjas!

Hot Breakfast! is opening for the Joe Trainor Trio at the Blue Parrot Bar and Grill in Wilmington on May 18th. I’m pretty sure we go on at 9pm, but keep your eyes peeled here and we’ll let you know for sure. Matt’s parents are going to be there, so make sure you say hello to them. (Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever even met them, so maybe if you say hello you can introduce us since you’ll be all buddy-buddy.)

[UPDATE: We start promptly at 9:30. We play until about 10:15. JT3 goes on at 10:30 sharp.]

Rumor has it that we’ll be playing a fairly good-sized set; perhaps 45 minutes to an hour. Of course, knowing Joe, he’ll cut our set down to 12 minutes or something. If that happens, maybe we can ask our Cool Little Brothers (who always have our back) to hold Joe down while we keep playing. We have an artistic statement to make, and we’re not leaving that stage until we’ve made it, golldarnit.

As of this writing, for some reason we’re not showing up on the Blue Parrot’s concert calendar. I’m not sure what that’s all about. We’ll get our people working on that right away. But you can trust us: we’re playing there.

[UPDATE: They updated their website, and our spiffy picture is on their band calendar. Woot! We’re famous! World Domination is IMMINENT!]

If you’ve got any requests, let us know. You can reply here if you want. We like it when you reply here.

OK, that’s all I’ve got to report for now.

Your pal,

Breakfast (aka Jill)

Hot? Breakfast? Who’s who?

There has always been some debate/confusion over which band member is “Hot” and which is “Breakfast.” Jill is convinced she’s “Breakfast” and that Matt is “Hot,” but Matt begs to differ. Fans also have mixed opinions. We were thinking about putting it up to a vote by polling the most important people, our Cool Little Brothers, but a piece of evidence surfaced that supports Jill’s argument: She is Breakfast. And you kinda can’t argue with this.

What is this evidence? It’s a piece of music called “Breakfast,” by LeLe. The song and the video are not work safe, but hoooo-lordy are they catchy and awesome. So feel free to click ahead if you’re feelin’ unsheltered.

If you don’t catch yourself randomly singing this song, you’d best be gettin’ some rhythm, son.

Our Christmas gift to you…

The HBHL1 has been ringing off the hook (three calls!!1!) since we played at Between Books on Friday. Our Cool Little Brothers (a.k.a. our die-hard fans) can’t stop telling us how our concert that night changed their lives. We know. It changed our lives, too.

Some fans have decided to start sporting jaunty caps like Matt’s, while others have vowed to take up interpretive dance like Jill. Still others have started speaking in accents native to the British Isles.. though we’re not exactly sure what that has to do with anything. Anyway, we’re trying to say that we feel your love, CLBs, yes we do. And we want to thank you in one of the only ways we know how.

Here is a list of the ways that HOT BREAKFAST! knows how to say Thank You:

  • send a thoughtful Thank You card through the US Mail
  • send you a whimsical arrangement of preservative-dipp’d fruits, specially cut and assembled to look like cheerful flowers of gratitude
  • “Danke! Das ist mein Badezimmer auf dem Tisch!”
  • clean your gutters
  • finally hem your dress pants
  • mail you an Applebee’s gift card
  • [redacted]
  • give you a free MP3 of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” from our show Friday night

Yes, our formatting gave it away: The most thoughtful (and economical) gift we can give to you, the rabid fans who would totally take a hot frying pan to the face for us, is a free (FREE!) recording of our performance of Do They Know It’s Christmas? so you all can re-live that moment over and over again.

Go ahead. Download it. Load it up on your preferred music-playing device and put on your noise-canceling headphones. Pour yourself a nice plastic cup of boxed Riunite and relax… close your eyes, and suddenly it’s exactly like you’re there at the concert at Between Books.2 And when you put the song on constant repeat, you can relive that magical four minutes and forty seconds over and over, like your own personal Groundhog Day.

It is true. We really do love you.

Here it is! Enjoy!

Hot Breakfast! at Between Books on 12-10-10 – Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Your pal,

Jill

Looking for your face?

Where’s your face?

If you were at The Tin Angel show last night, it was ROCKED THE HELL OFF, that’s where! You can pick it up (along with any socks that may have been rocked off) at The Mid-Atlantic Regional Office of the Hot Breakfast Secret Lair where charts and graphs indicate our World Domination should be happening pretty much any time now. We’ve ramped up coverage in our call center to make sure we don’t miss the call from Rolling Stone.

What shall we do with the unclaimed faces (earlye in the mornin’)?
Stay tuned. Our lawyers are workin’ on it.

Matt’s new tunes

Matt has been working on some new tunes, and he just released another album. Hot Breakfast is sometimes too overwhelmingly awesome for one man to take, so to ensure he stays healthy and doesn’t explode from all of the freakin’ ROCKING, he chills out with a nice malt liquor beverage and some recording equipment and records his own stuff. You can check it out here. I will be timing how long you are over at that web page because you really need to be spending your time right here.

But then again, I also understand that there’s only so much awesoming you fans (our “cool little brothers”) can take, so I suppose it’s OK for you to spend some time with Matt and his solo stuff. But make sure you listen to “Elephant Gun” a lot, because that’s actually a Hot Breakfast tune. Matt knew he needed to add that to his CD or otherwise it probably wouldn’t sell.

I am comfortable with Matt riding on Hot Breakfast’s coat-tails. Lord knows The Industrial Jazz Group, the Joe Trainor Trio, and Billy Joel do it.1

Mercy

I really like it when musicians say “Mercy” in their songs.  I don’t want them to sing it… I want them to say it, almost under their breath.  It is extra-cool if they do it during or after an awesome guitar solo.

That’s what I think.

I dare you to say “Mercy” in your best Elvis voice right now, even if you don’t have an awesome guitar solo handy.  I’ll wait.

Don’t you feel cool?

I mean, OK, you’ll never be as cool as us, but you could totally be like our cool little brothers or something.
