Uncategorized World Premiere free download spreading the love

Our gift to you… a free download of our new song “Going Your Way.”

You know, we could all use a little reminder now and then that we’re not alone. It’s a dark time of year (in fact, we’re just an hour away from the winter solstice as I type this!) and it’s easy to feel kinda isolated and lost among the hustle and bustle of the season.

But we have a new song called “Going Your Way,” which tries to remind the listener that they’re not alone; that someone’s always got their back. It’s really sweet. When Matt played it for me the first time, I admit that I cried… it hit me right in the feels.

And you know what else gets us in the feels? YOU. Meaning, we get really overwhelmed with gratitude when we see you all at our shows, giving us love and enthusiastic fist pumps, and singing along with us. It’s really something to feel such love coming back at us. We promise that we never, ever take you for granted, and we promise always to work our hardest for you. We never forget that every person in the audience gave up their hard-earned money, free time, and the tractor beam of their comfy couches to come spend time with us. There are a million other wonderful, worthwhile ways that you could have spent your time, yet you chose to come out and let us make music for you. It’s an honor. I know this all sounds grandiose, but it’s sincere… there are lots of happening. For all of this, we wanted to thank you. But how? By giving you what we know how to give best: music.

So, between now and January 4th 2015, we’re making our brand new song “Going Your Way” available to you as a free download. After that date, you can stream it for free at Soundcloud or on Reverbnation, and if you want to buy it, you’ll have to wait until the release of the new album in the early spring of 2015.

This song, just like every other song on our forthcoming album, was produced by Ritchie Rubini. This particular track is a warm, non-dorky song about kindness, featuring 19 layers of backing vocal tracks, all arranged and performed by Jill. And like every other Hot Breakfast tune, there is absolutely no auto-tune, no Melodyne, no pitch correction, nada. What you hear is what we played/sang. We’re humans, after all… so we wanna sound like humans. Gloriously imperfect, as they say.

Anyway, here’s the song. We really hope you like it. And thank you again for another great year. We do this for you, and we really, really are so grateful for the opportunity. Thank you. Really. Thank you.

Here’s to a warm, happy, (dorky!) and healthy 2015.

With love and thanks,

Jill & Matt

LYRICS:
Going Your Way (Matt Casarino)
(c) 2014 Suburban Legends Music

Now and then you’re the jester in the lion’s den
Held and chained, kept alive to keep them entertained
Even if they grant you pardon
They keep a piece of you behind
But when they close you down
You will find I’m open all the time

I will stand below you when you fall
I will get behind you when you stall
Oooh – And when it’s time to walk away
I’m going your way

Now and then you realize you missed the ball again
It’s just your fate to get the invitation one day late
Then they tell you you should smile
Like that will turn your clouds to gold
I have some words to tell ’em
Better yet, let’s leave ’em in the cold

I’m not gonna tell you what to do
I’m happy to be miserable with you
Oooh – that’s what I call a good day
I’m going your way

Sometimes you fight sometimes you flee
Try as you might you’re stuck with me

But if you never had a bad day
You’d never know how good it feels
When everything goes right
When all your open wounds have healed

I will stand below you when you fall
I will get behind you when you stall

Oooh You know it’s gonna be okay
I’m going your way
I’m going your way

MATT’S SOLO GIG: Friday, October 18, World Cafe Live at the Queen, 7:00

It’s been over three years since Matt has played a show without Jill. That’s a long time.

Matt had a slightly different look going back then.

So when the fabulous Jeremy Hebbel of Gable Music Ventures asked him if he wanted to play at their monthly Singer/Songwriter Showcase in October, Matt wasn’t sure what to do. On one hand, he’s been a singer/songwriter for many years before Hot Breakfast! formed, and he has three solo albums to his name: 1996’s Local Hero, 2007’s Songs for the Earthbound, and 2010’s All This Life. So it ain’t like he’s never played a solo gig before. But on the other, he loves his current position as “the one who plays guitar” in Delaware’s Premier Acoustic Dork-Rock Power Duo; since Hot Breakfast! formed, Matt hadn’t even considered playing a solo gig. Anyway, after days of teeth-gnashing, hand-wringing introspection, he asked Jill what she thought he should do.

“Just take the gig,” she said.

"Now go away. Can't you see I'm busy?"
“Now go away. Can’t you see I’m busy?”

So on Friday, October 18th at World Cafe Live at the Queen, Matt will proudly join Big Tusk, Brooke DiCaro, Canyon, Robin Renee, and The Sun Flights for a night filled with singer/songwriter goodness! The show kicks off at 7:00pm – each artist will take two 15-minute sets. This is an incredibly diverse lineup of artists from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey – there’s gonna be some wonderful music going down. And it’s at the Queen, which means GREAT DRINKS and DELICIOUS NOMS.

Now, Matt still isn’t sure what songs he’ll be performing, but none of them will be in the current Hot Breakfast! catalog. And rumor has it, he’ll be performing two songs for the very first time. That’s right – even if you’re deeply familiar with Matt’s music catalog (hi, mom!), he’s going to play two songs you’ve never heard before.

So come on out to the Singer/Songwriter Showcase at World Cafe Live at the Queen! Remember…the show starts at 7:00, and dinner reservations are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. You can make ’em by calling (302) 994-1400 or by visiting OpenTable.com. Yep – you can make dinner reservations simply by clicking a few buttons, because we live in the future.

Be “An Idiot for Christmas” – just like Hot Breakfast! (WTSW’s holiday compilation is here!)

Your favorite acoustic dork-rock power duo (that’d be Hot Breakfast! – whaddya mean, Paul and Storm!?) got a wonderful early present this year.

Our new song, “An Idiot for Christmas,” was selected to be on the 2012 WSTW Hometown Heroes album Comfort, Joy, Love and Snow. We are honored and humbled to be included with so many incredible local musicians.

The album contains 33 songs, all performed by Delaware-area musicians, and it’s yours to download for a minimum contribution of $10. TEN DOLLARS! FOR 33 SONGS! All proceeds from album sales benefit Toys for Tots.

We made a promise to put our song on our site as a free download, so here it is – you can stream or download the song (as an MP3) below. We hope you like it. We really hope this won’t be that song that everyone hates, a la that “Christmas Shoes” song, but we’re not holding our breath, because we like breathing.

But please, please, consider purchasing the wonderful WSTW album. It has songs by some of our favorite performers, including Angela Sheik, RKVC, Sunshine Superman, Em McKeever, and many, many more. Give it a listen – you’re sure to have some new favorites when you’re through.

Until then, you are welcome to stream “An Idiot for Christmas” right here via the widget below, and you can even download it by clicking the teeeeeeny arrow button on the right side of the widget.

Mobile users can click this link here: Hot Breakfast! – An Idiot for Christmas.

We hope you like it!

Your pals,

Suburban Legend & Ji11

Free Halloween download! (The Cowboy Outlaw)

OK, so get this.

We wanted to record a creepy song for Halloween and present it as a free download because we love you. We chose “The Cowboy Outlaw” by Brian Dewan because Jill is totally obsessed with him, and he also wrote “Wastepaper Basket Fire” which you’ve probably heard us cover if you’ve seen us live. He also created the interior album artwork for “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel, if that means anything to you. (It’s one of our favorite albums of all time, no exaggeration.)

So Hurricane Sandy rolled in and made the power at Knappshack Studios all wonky, so we recorded and mixed/mastered it in a rush so we could get it to you before the electricity cut out. We even made a video of us recording it, but YouTube is doing site maintenance right now, so we can’t upload it. (It’s not that exciting anyway, really.)

In order for us to provide our version of this song as a digital download, we had to secure the rights to the song, just like we did for Kiss Off and Major Tom. Once we got that done, all we had left to do was upload it to this here website, write this blog post, and get the word out.

Ji11 was feeling benevolent so she copied/pasted the lyrics below for you, and while she did that, she had Googled to see if Brian Dewan had a video for the song. But instead of finding a video, she saw a Snopes article that mentioned the song. APPARENTLY IT IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY. How cool is that?!? We had no idea. Which makes the song even spookier. Yay!

So… here’s the song, and here are the lyrics below it. Enjoy! And have a happy and safe Halloween.

The Cowboy Outlaw
by Brian Dewan
From his (freakin’ amazing) album Tells the Story

Gather ’round my children, and I’ll tell a tale of woe
About a famous cowboy outlaw who lived a hundred years ago.
Today his soul at last is resting peacefully in hell
Though many years have passed away since through the gallows-trap he fell.

He was sitting propped up in a chair just after he was hanged
And they photographed his body as a distant churchbell rang.
A circus man was waiting with fifty dollars in his coat
And he bought the cowboy outlaw so he could have him in his show.

And very soon he was embalmed and toured from town to town
People paid to see the outlaw that they’d heard so much about
He stood before them with a pistol against a painted scene
The greatest cowboy outlaw that the world had ever seen

But in time he was forgotten and no one knew his name
And when he began to fall apart they took his booth away
They painted him with varnish and put a crown upon his head
Come and see the king of Egypt said the sign out front instead

And then one year the circus closed, the tents were packed away
And he was sold to an amusement park on Massachusetts Bay
He was sold for next to nothing and they packed him in the van
They thought they’d bought a dummy but they’d really bought a man.

He was sprayed a special color to help him look a fright
And they hung him from a gallows ‘neath an ultra-violet light
He hung there in a spookhouse for many, many years
As youthful faces passed him by in tiny railroad cars

Until one fine and fateful day in 1976
He fell down from the gallows when the hangman’s noose unhitched
His arm broke at the shoulder as he clattered to the floor
And the man who went to fix him was stunned by what he saw

And the teenage boys did holler, and the teenage girls did faint
When they saw the bone protruding from the varnish and the paint
A coroner came to serve him and ran a slew of tests
they found out who he was, in time, and laid his soul to rest

A hundred years have come and gone since he spoke his final words
I’m not afraid to die and leave behind this rotten world
So go and pull the lever hangman, now my race on Earth is run
And he thought his life was ended but it had only just begun
