GIG: Philly’s Primary Stages, November 20 & 21, 7:30

Just as Delaware is known for having a great acoustic dork-rock power duo scene (if you consider Hot Breakfast! a scene) (as we certainly do), Philadelphia is known for having a great underground theater scene, and one of the driving forces is Philly’s Primary Stages. PPS is a “down and dirty script-in-hand staged reading series of new 10 minute plays” where playwrights get to see their new works up on their feet, and actors and directors get a fun, short project to jump into. Audience members are bribed with beer, wine, sodee pop, bottled water, assorted chips, dips, vienna sausages and puddin’ packs.

We Hot Breakfastians come from pretty strong theater backgrounds ourselves, so we love getting to split our time between being on stage as pre-show and back-stage as the house-band/soundtrack.

This month’s shows are happening on Tuesday, November 20th and Wednesday, November 21st – right before Thanksgiving. We play a 30-40 minute set beginning at 7:30pm, and then a 15-ish minute set at intermission. We also play the outro music for each play– songs that are hand-picked by the directors. (The directors love to test us, so we’ve been asked to do everything from rap, Led Zep, play Sousa marches on kazoos, and even play TV theme songs. We never know what we’re gonna be asked to do for the out-tro music, but we have a blast retrofitting these songs for our dork-rock-duo instrumentation.)

There are six different 10-minute plays each night, so if you’re feelin’ theatery, you could come both nights and see a ton of fresh, original theater. We can’t promise we won’t repeat any songs, however… we have to play the crowd-pleasers! 🙂

DEETS:

WHERE: New Location! Community Education Center: 3500 Lancaster Ave. (sorta near 30th St. Station) Philadelphia, PA 19104-4916
WHEN: November 20th and 21st. Doors open at 7ish, HB! plays at 7:30 sharp, the plays start at 8pm. Different plays both nights!
CASH: Five bucks donation… feel free to give more if you’re so moved.

For a measly five bucks ($5!), you get a night of terrific theater, snackies, beverages, and music. What better way to spend a mid-week, pre-Thanksgiving night?

See you then!

Suburban Legend and Ji11

Free Halloween download! (The Cowboy Outlaw)

OK, so get this.

We wanted to record a creepy song for Halloween and present it as a free download because we love you. We chose “The Cowboy Outlaw” by Brian Dewan because Jill is totally obsessed with him, and he also wrote “Wastepaper Basket Fire” which you’ve probably heard us cover if you’ve seen us live. He also created the interior album artwork for “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel, if that means anything to you. (It’s one of our favorite albums of all time, no exaggeration.)

So Hurricane Sandy rolled in and made the power at Knappshack Studios all wonky, so we recorded and mixed/mastered it in a rush so we could get it to you before the electricity cut out. We even made a video of us recording it, but YouTube is doing site maintenance right now, so we can’t upload it. (It’s not that exciting anyway, really.)

In order for us to provide our version of this song as a digital download, we had to secure the rights to the song, just like we did for Kiss Off and Major Tom. Once we got that done, all we had left to do was upload it to this here website, write this blog post, and get the word out.

Ji11 was feeling benevolent so she copied/pasted the lyrics below for you, and while she did that, she had Googled to see if Brian Dewan had a video for the song. But instead of finding a video, she saw a Snopes article that mentioned the song. APPARENTLY IT IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY. How cool is that?!? We had no idea. Which makes the song even spookier. Yay!

So… here’s the song, and here are the lyrics below it. Enjoy! And have a happy and safe Halloween.

The Cowboy Outlaw
by Brian Dewan
From his (freakin’ amazing) album Tells the Story

Gather ’round my children, and I’ll tell a tale of woe
About a famous cowboy outlaw who lived a hundred years ago.
Today his soul at last is resting peacefully in hell
Though many years have passed away since through the gallows-trap he fell.

He was sitting propped up in a chair just after he was hanged
And they photographed his body as a distant churchbell rang.
A circus man was waiting with fifty dollars in his coat
And he bought the cowboy outlaw so he could have him in his show.

And very soon he was embalmed and toured from town to town
People paid to see the outlaw that they’d heard so much about
He stood before them with a pistol against a painted scene
The greatest cowboy outlaw that the world had ever seen

But in time he was forgotten and no one knew his name
And when he began to fall apart they took his booth away
They painted him with varnish and put a crown upon his head
Come and see the king of Egypt said the sign out front instead

And then one year the circus closed, the tents were packed away
And he was sold to an amusement park on Massachusetts Bay
He was sold for next to nothing and they packed him in the van
They thought they’d bought a dummy but they’d really bought a man.

He was sprayed a special color to help him look a fright
And they hung him from a gallows ‘neath an ultra-violet light
He hung there in a spookhouse for many, many years
As youthful faces passed him by in tiny railroad cars

Until one fine and fateful day in 1976
He fell down from the gallows when the hangman’s noose unhitched
His arm broke at the shoulder as he clattered to the floor
And the man who went to fix him was stunned by what he saw

And the teenage boys did holler, and the teenage girls did faint
When they saw the bone protruding from the varnish and the paint
A coroner came to serve him and ran a slew of tests
they found out who he was, in time, and laid his soul to rest

A hundred years have come and gone since he spoke his final words
I’m not afraid to die and leave behind this rotten world
So go and pull the lever hangman, now my race on Earth is run
And he thought his life was ended but it had only just begun

You can also send us questions via text, and we’ll answer them on air– listen to the show for details. (Though if anyone asks us a breakfast-related question (“Are you serving pancakes?”) we will make fun of you for being horribly unoriginal.)

Or if you’re busy tonight (we understand!), you can listen to the archived show via podcast by clicking here. It usually takes a day for the show to get posted online, so if you don’t see it tomorrow, give it a few more hours.

GIG: Wilmo Rock Circus at the Queen! Saturday, November 24

A long, long time ago (2011), Joe Trainor and Jeremy Hebbel and Gayle Dillman of Gable Music Ventures got together and decided to create the biggest, baddest, most ambitious “pop-up” festival of local musicians Delaware has ever seen: The Wilmo Rock Circus. Over a dozen bands got together to showcase their music at the Wilmington Riverfront, and man oh man, was it great.

But…something was missing. Something wild. Something daring. Something…dorky.

So THIS year, we’re pleased to announce that your favorite acoustic dork-rock power duo has been added to the bill of the Second Annual WILMO ROCK CIRCUS! Hot Breakfast, along with over 20 other great bands, will take over World Cafe Live at the Queen on 5th and Market Streets in Wilmington, Delaware for one great night of music on Saturday, November 24th. Some of our favorite bands, including the Joe Trainor Trio, LoveBettie, New Sweden, the Keefs, Rod Kim & Vince Cirino, and many, many more, will be rocking the whole place, upstairs and down. This all-ages event is gonna be amazing.

Now, we’re not sure when we’re playing yet – this much rocking takes a LOT of planning, and there are still some details to be ironed out. But you can look for us in the downstairs balcony, where we’ll be rocking out some short sets (a live feed will be broadcast throughout the building). And you might just catch us joining another band or two during the night.

The rocking starts at 6:00 pm on Saturday, November 24th. Tickets are $15 in advance ($17 at the door), which is quite a bargain for this much entertainment. They’ll be available soon online at the Wilmo Rock Circus official site.

So come celebrate Thanksgiving with a little Hot Breakfast! – and a whole lot of ROCK!!!

Yours,
The Suburban Legend (Matt) and Ji11

GIG: COMEDY ROCKS! 10/25 at 7:30pm, World Cafe Live at the Queen

The fine folks at Gable Music Ventures approached us at an open mic night a few months back, and suggested we once again join forces with musical funnyman Todd Chappelle and a standup comedian for a show at The Queen. We jumped on board, and were soon told that the lovely and talented stand-up comedian Ms. Shari Short would be our emcee for the evening. Shari is farking hilarious– we had a private performance the other night and just fell in love.

The show is scheduled for Thursday, October 25th, and it’s at 7:30pm. (Yes, really! Midweek shows start earlier sometimes, and this is one of those times.)

Todd will sing his signature funny songs, we’ll be leaning on our dorkier material (and we’ve got a new song to debut!), and Shari will perform stand-up between our sets. And you will laugh. And eat. And drink. And drink some more… which will make you laugh some more.

And you will also wish Brian a happy birthday, since he is the world’s first Cool Little Brother (CLBs are official fans of Hot Breakfast!) and he pulls rank.

DEETS:

Post-gig depression…

Hey all–

We are just beside ourselves from how amazing this weekend was. Between the Joe Trainor Trio CD release party at World Cafe Live at the Queen on Friday night to the super-secret show in Arden last night… seriously, we’re having some serious post-gig depression here. Both shows were packed to the gills, the crowds were so enthusiastic and giving us TONS of energy back… it’s times like these that make us so, so, so grateful that we get to do what we do.

A billion thank-yous to everyone who supported all of the amazing events of this weekend, in body and spirit. We really felt the love and are so incredibly appreciative. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe how we’re feeling; but the words “extreme gratitude,” “humbled,” and “rocktastic” are coming to mind.

The incredible Joe del Tufo took photos from last night’s super-secret show in Arden, where we opened for Kate Miller-Heidke. (The super-secret show is no longer super-secret– though it was a private, invite-only concert and not open to the public at all.) Kate is currently touring with Ben Folds Five, and she also toured with Ben back when he was touring solo, too… and Kate and Ben Folds Five are playing a their big Philly show tonight at the Tower Theater– we’ll see you there!

Thanks again, everyone. 🙂
