Videos

Hot Breakfast! “Hole In Your Pants” One of our signature dorky songs, recorded at our sold-out album release party in May 2013 at World Cafe Live at the Queen. We just uploaded this, hence the small number of views… don’t judge. 🙂 (Video opens in a new window.)

Hot Breakfast! covers the classic Styx song “Mr. Roboto”. This was also recorded at our sold-out album release party in May 2013 at World Cafe Live at the Queen. Same caveat applies: We just uploaded this, hence the small number of views… don’t judge. 🙂 (Video opens in a new window.) For another look at “Mr. Roboto”…

Hot Breakfast! plays “Mr. Roboto” at all-acoustic gig in Philly. On July 3, 2015, Hot Breakfast! performed an exclusive gig with the legendary punk band The Dead Milkmen at Crash Bang Boom in Philly. The all-acoustic show (no mics or amps) celebrated the 10th anniversary of Crash Bang Boom, the fantastic punk clothing store formerly known as Zipperhead. (Video opens in a new window.)

Hot Breakfast! makes a submission to NPR’S Tiny Desk Contest with their song “It Only Takes Two to Rock.” Recorded in the “great room” of Knappshack Studios. (Video opens in a new window.)

Hot Breakfast! plays “Kiss Off” by the Violent Femmes It’s rare that we play cover tunes, but this sold-out crowd at the New Candlelight Theater in January 2011 was all about the 80s music, so we couldn’t resist. (Video opens in a new window.)

Hot Breakfast! “An Idiot for Christmas” This video was shot over three seasons in 2013, and was conceived and directed by Kevin Regan. (Video opens in a new window.)

Hot Breakfast! “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” On the rare occasion we do a cover, it’ll be an 80s tune, and you can bet it’ll be over the top. This is from a show pretty early in our career. This video has well over 80,000 views! (Video opens in a new window.)

Bios for you to Copy and Paste — pick a length you like!

Medium-length bio:

HOT BREAKFAST! is Delaware’s premier acoustic dork-rock power duo. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, this well-traveled, entertaining duo features Jill Knapp’s award-winning powerhouse vocals, Matt Casarino’s award-winning songwriting and furious acoustic guitar work, and a rockin’, fun, dorky, often hilarious live show. They’ve won over audiences all across North America with their playful, inclusive, and compelling approach to music, an approach that makes them equally comfortable at huge festivals (SXSW 2014-2016, Flipside 2012, Burning Man 2011, 2018), large punk and rockabilly venues like the Trocadero in Philly and Slim’s in San Francisco, and Mowhawk Bar in Austin (where they’ve shared the stage with The Dead Milkmen), folk clubs, coffeehouses, and intimate house concerts. Original tracks from their 2012 self-titled EP and their full-length albums The Big Reveal (2015), 39 Summers (2013) and even their Christmas album The Holiday Shift (2017-2018) continue to enjoy radio play around the world on terrestrial, internet, and even satellite stations, with their songs featured on Little Steven’s Underground Garage (“Underground”) and the Dr. Demento Show (“Hole in Your Pants”). In March 2020, they began their popular “Covid Coffee Break Concerts”; 15-minute afternoon concerts designed to give their working-from-home fans a quick afternoon break, which are still going strong. They’ve got several WSTW Homey Awards on their shelves for Best Live Act (2015 & 2016!), Best Songwriter, Best Lead Singer (twice!), Best EP, & Best Collaboration (twice!), and they finished Second Runner-Up in 2014’s Best of World Cafe Live’s Philly Rising competition, out of hundreds of musicians. Plus, they’ve logged many thousands of tour miles since their official formation in 2010, and they have no plans to stop now. After a Hot Breakfast! show, what is left of your melted face will be smiling. Dork’s honor.

HOT BREAKFAST! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Does the band’s name include the exclamation point?

A: Yes. The band’s name is officially Hot Breakfast! with the exclamation point at the end (just like how fun.‘s name is in all lowercase and always ends with a period). We acknowledge it makes print articles look funny, especially when the band’s name starts a sentence or when the possessive case is warranted, so we’re not sticklers about it. We do ask that if you’re omitting the exclamation point for design reasons, then please be sure to use all caps. Thanks so much!

Q: What are the full names of the band members, and what instruments to each of you play?

A: During a live show, our lineup looks like this:
Jill Knapp – lead singer, hand percussion, melodica (aka “hooter”), trumpet
Matt Casarino – guitar, vocals

On our albums though, we play other instruments, too. Matt plays electric guitar, bass, sax, drums, and keyboards, and Jill plays keyboards, various wind instruments, and bigger percussion.

Q: What do you consider your genre?
A:
We coined the term “dork rock” because we didn’t really have a genre we fit easily into. While we use humor in our shows and play a few funny songs, we’re not really a comedy band; we have plenty of straightforward pop/rock and sincere tunes, too. Above everything, we strive to be the best possible musicians we can be, and to also put on an entertaining, energetic live show.

Q: Please list any and all websites and social media platforms where our readers can listen to your music and learn more about the band.

Q: Where did you two meet, and how did the band get its start?
A:
We met in late 2002 at auditions for a community theater production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Jill got cast as Mary Magdalene, and Matt was cast as Annas (one of the priests). We played together for the first time in 2003 at the cast party and realized we had a pretty good groove together. We’ve worked together ever since on Matt’s various solo projects and on other large-scale productions headed up by Joe Trainor, too. We decided to officially join forces in 2009 and focus exclusively on working as a duo; that’s when Hot Breakfast! was officially born.

Q: What’s the story behind the name, “Hot Breakfast!” – who coined it, and what is the meaning?
A:
Our name was taken from a t-shirt that was randomly mailed to Jill’s house by a friend who’d found it at a garage sale in Austin, TX. The shirt features the silhouette of a man with mighty dreadlocks thrusting his fist into the air, with “HOT BREAKFAST!” in bold, all-caps text underneath. When we needed a band band name, Jill jokingly suggested “Hot Breakfast!” since “we already had one piece of merch.” Through a series of amazing coincidences, we learned that this single t-shirt was created to “honor” a construction worker in the Austin area who demanded, among other luxuries, a hot breakfast every morning. The rest of the construction crew made the shirt to mock him. (At least we think we’re remembering that right…)

Q: We can’t help but notice that every time someone mentions your name, people yell “HOT BREAKFAST!” while pumping their fist. How do you get people to do that?
A:
We wish we knew! People did that at our very first gig, completely unprompted… and it just stuck. We’re certainly not complaining; we absolutely love it. It becomes a gag over the course of a night, where people introducing us get playfully interrupted by enthusiastic fans. We are so happy fans like us enough to yell stuff in our honor!

Q: What in the HECK is dork rock?
A:
We think dork-rock is music by and for dorks… and really, who doesn’t consider themselves at least a little dorky? We tend to “dork-out” with quirky originals (“Hole in Your Pants,” “It Only Takes Two to Rock” and “The Garden of Bad Metaphors”) and unlikely, over-the-top covers with a theatrical flourish (“Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Crazy Train”). We just write and play what we love, and hope that our tastes are broad enough that we can appeal to just about everyone. But really, anything can be dork-rock. Billy Squier is pretty dorky, and so is AC/DC’s “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” when you really think about it.

Q: What’s the difference between a dork, a nerd, and a geek?
A:
Back in high school, being called a dork, nerd, or geek were insults. But now these words are things to be proud of. To us, “dork” means you’re smart and good at what you do (whatever that is), but you aren’t concerned with the mainstream, and you could care less about being or appearing “cool.” You find the funny and quirky in everyday things. You read reddit.com and fark.com. You probably don’t care what a Kardashian is. You can spell. I think a dork is a nerd with a pop-culture lean, as opposed to a “nerd” or “geek” who tends to gravitate to the sci-fi, fantasy, and IT side of the house. But don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of overlap. I mean, what person with a music degree doesn’t have an IT job? 🙂

Q: On the topic of dork rock, what famous band do you look to as inspiration for this genre?
A:
They Might Be Giants and older Barenaked Ladies, Paul and Storm, Tenacious D… we suppose we’d let them into our dork-rock category. 🙂 The Dead Milkmen fall into the dork-punk-rock side of things. Jonathan Coulton and MC Chris are great, but more on the “nerd” side of the dork spectrum, with their songs about IT jobs and Star Wars. But it’s really about dorky attitude and a desire to abandon all aspects of “cool.” You can’t just write a funny song and call yourselves dork-rock (nice try, Nickelback, but no) – you need a certain panache, a certain willingness to rock out as if your life depended on it even while playing a Whitesnake song on an acoustic guitar.

Q: Do you consider yourselves a comedy musicians (a comedy band)?
A:
No, not really. We try to be entertaining, but our goal isn’t to be exclusively funny… we leave that to the pros like Stephen Lynch and Todd Chappelle. While we have some songs that are humorous (“Hole In Your Pants,” “Kids Today,” “The Garden of Bad Metaphors”), we like to use humor as a tool to engage the audience and pull them in; but making people laugh isn’t our exclusive goal. Similar to the band Barenaked Ladies, they have funny songs like “If I Had A Million Dollars” or “Be My Yoko Ono” which is probably what got you interested in the band, but you love them because of their more serious material like “Brian Wilson” and “Call and Answer.” I wouldn’t call those guys a comedy band; I’d call them a talented bunch of musicians whose personalities and sense of humor comes through in their music; we like that description for us, too.

Q: Since your band name is “Hot Breakfast!”, we imagine you have pretty high standards for breakfast foods. Describe the perfect hot breakfast.
A:
Jill’s ideal Delaware hot breakfast would be a swiss cheese omelette with tomatoes and green peppers in there, a side of turkey sausage, and an english muffin Angel’s Restaurant on Silverside Road in north Wilmington, Delaware. Matt’s a ham-and-eggs man, but he grew up believing that any leftover, when re-heated in a buttered skillet, makes for an elegant breakfast side dish (turkey, chicken, sliced-up hot dogs). We love hash browns, but we’ve reached the age where they don’t love us anymore. Sigh.

Jill says, “Though there’s a breakfast place in Tempe, Arizona called US Egg, and they have the most amazing pancakes you have ever eaten in your entire life, and I make a pilgrimage there every few years to get my dose. They’re called “protein cakes” and they’re basically cinnamonny pancakes with 89 pounds of slivered almonds, granola, and blueberries packed in there, served with real butter and real maple syrup. We played a show in Arizona in early 2012, and I had the chance to introduce Matt to those pancakes… and even though I hyped them to the max, they still exceeded his expectations. I wonder if we could get a deal with them. We also had the most transcendent corned beef hash EVER at Dad’s Restaurant in Wallingford, Connecticut.”
