VOTE in the WSTW HOMEY AWARDS

Most accurate T-shirt slogan ever.
Most accurate T-shirt slogan ever.

We know. Seriously, we do. You thought you wouldn’t have to endure another appeal for your vote for at least a couple weeks.1 Well, at the risk of conjuring up images of a bygone election…we feel your pain.

But this time, it’s different. It’s for real. It is on, Brothers and Sisters.

This time, we’re asking you to vote in the 2013 WSTW Homey Awards (the link goes to a Facebook Note that lists the categories and nominees you can choose from, but don’t worry, you don’t need a Facebook account to view it). This is where you get to vote for all your favorite Delaware musicians, bands, songs, albums, videos, rock hairstyles2, and pretty much anything else you can think of from this past year.

And as you most likely know, 2012 was an amazing year for Delaware music.

How do you do it? Simple. Just send an email to Homey (at) wstw.com with your picks between now and February 2nd, 2013. All of the categories, eligible albums, EPs, and songs are listed on that Facebook Note, but you don’t need Facebook to vote – and you can even add your own categories in your email. Because this is the preliminary round, you can pick up to five nominees in any category, but you only get one email entry per person… so make it good!

As hey, as it turns out, your pals Hot Breakfast! are eligible for this round’s voting! We’d love it if you’d consider us for:

  • EP of the Year (“Hot Breakfast!”)
  • Song of the Year (“Hole in Your Pants”)
  • Band
  • New Artist
  • Lead Singer (that’d be Jill Knapp)
  • Live Act
  • Comedy-Music Artist
  • Acoustic Dork-Rock Power Duo
  • Acoustic Punk Duo, although we kinda doubt these two categories will make the final cut

…and any other category where you think we deserve a nod!

If you’re very trusting (or just lazy), scroll down to the comment below and copy/paste that into your nomination email. See how helpful we are?

But tell you what, friends – even if you DON’T vote for us, we still want you to vote. There are so many wonderful musicians in Delaware – the original music scene here is as active, essential, and vibrant as ever – and this is a great way to show some love to your favorites. We are so indebted to WSTW’s Hometown Heroes for their wonderful focus on, and commitment to, Delaware music, and hosting these awards is a great way to give recognition to the many, many wonderful artists in the area.

So vote, won’t you? Again, in this preliminary round, you can vote for up to five artists/venues in each category. And all of them will love you and find you wildly appealing.

Why? Because VOTING IS SEXY, that’s why.

We are saluting.
We salute you.

Your fellow Americans,
Hot Breakfast!

* * * * * * * * *

1 We don’t really understand the election cycle. We just assume it’s always election season, just like it’s always basketball season.
2 “Rock Hairstyles” isn’t really a category. Although if it was, we’d probably pick Jill’s Dragonball Z look over Matt’s You Don’t Know Jack look.

GIG: Saturday January 19th 8:30PM: Mojo Main

Yes, we know our name isn't on this flyer. YET.
Yes, we know our name isn’t on this flyer. YET.

MY GOOD PEOPLE:
WE PROMISED YOU WORLD DOMINATION WAS IMMINENT, AND THE DAY IT IS HAPPENING IS JANUARY 19th 2013.

How do we know?
Because our name is about to be added to a flyer along with the phrase “Pabst Blue Ribbon Presents.”

WE HAVE ARRIVED.

How did this “arriving” happen?

A few days after we signed the paperwork to play at the Delaware Friends of Folk coffeehouse, we received an email from TriState Indie asking us if we wanted to be part of an AMAZING bill at Mojo Main on the same evening as the coffeehouse. We gracefully declined because a contract is a contract, and we asked them to keep us in mind for the next time. They said they would.

We just learned today that this month’s coffeehouse at Delaware Friends of Folk had to be postponed, so we asked the Tri State Indie folks if they still needed a an acoustic dork-rock power duo. They said “Heck yeah!” so we said “Woot!” and there you have it. (Once again, Amanda Palmer’s advice rings true: “Always ask; you never know.”)

We’ll be playing an abbreviated set, but we still need you to come out and show Tri-State Indie that we’re a band worth loving.

Here’s the scoop!

DEETS:

EVENT NAME: PBR Presents: Tric Town January: Tri State Indie Pre Music Awards Showcase at Mojo Main
WHO: Hot Breakfast!, Revolution I Love You, Moon Children, Mean Lady, Universal Funk Order. Aaaaaaand a listening party for Spinto Band’s new album!
WHEN: Saturday, January 19th. Hot Breakfast kicks the night off at 8:50PM and plays until 9:15PM. (We know the Facebook event and the flyer say 9PM. We’re playing before that. Trust us.)
WHERE: Mojo Main, 270 E Main St, Newark, Delaware 19711
PARKING: They have a private lot. If it’s full, park on the street. No biggie.
FOOD: They have bar and cajun food at Mojo Main. It is tasty. Lots of drink specials, too!
TICKETS: $6. Buy them at the door, or here.
FACEBOOK EVENT LINK: Here ya go!

So just when you thought you’d be missing us this weekend… have no fear. There’s plenty of Hot Breakfast! to go around.

See you there?

Your pal,

Ji11

GIG RESCHEDULED: Delaware Friends of Folk in Dover, DE is now March 23 at 7:30pm

Delaware Friends of Folk; the warmest people around.
Delaware Friends of Folk; the warmest people around.

Friends,

We just heard some very sad news: One of the board members of the Delaware Friends of Folk passed away very suddenly last night. We are absolutely heartbroken for his family, friends, and colleagues. We hadn’t met him yet, but we can already tell what an anchor he was for the regional folk music community.

(We are intentionally omitting his name until all of his family and friends are notified. Google spiders things very quickly.)

As you might imagine, the members of the Delaware Friends of Folk have chosen to cancel this month’s coffeehouse and reschedule it for March. The new date is Saturday, March 23rd, and the event will be otherwise unchanged: The doors will open at 7pm, Trini will remain the opening act and she will take the stage at 7:30pm, and we will begin playing at 8:30 and play for 90 minutes. The location won’t change, either. Our hearts will be a bit fuller, though. 🙂

We’ve updated the Facebook event, and we’ve edited the prior post about it to reflect the new dates and times. (For you techie types, we chose not to change that post’s permalink URL so no previously-made links break.)

Our hearts go out to all of the members and fans of the Delaware Friends of Folk and their families.

Give someone you love an extra hug tonight, OK?

Much love,

Matt and Jill <3

Radio Spot: 1/16 and 1/19: In-Studio Guests on Y-Not Radio!

HEY! Wanna hear your favorite acoustic punk-dork-rock-power-duo perform live on the radio and chatter about all things dork? Well, now you can!

We are this week’s featured band on Y-Not Radio’s local music spotlight– how cool is that? This afternoon we headed out to their West Philly studio to chat with the mighty Josh T. Landow about how our new album is coming along, the virtues of Fig Newtons, and a little band history, too… and we even performed a few songs live for their sweet studio audience. It was a blast.

The show will debut this Wednesday, January 16 at 11am and later at 10pm and will replay on Saturday, January 19 at 8pm.

Since we were representin’ our fine state of Delaware, we were asked to curate a hand-picked playlist of some of our favorite music from our favorite Delaware bands (OK, one’s from Baltimore, but we met them at the Wilmo Rock Circus so we’ll let it slide). A teaser: When you tune in, you’ll be one of the first people on the earth to hear a track from Angela Sheik’s upcoming album, and you’ll also hear some great cuts from Brene Wilson, The Joe Trainor Trio, The Keefs, Rachel Schain, The Way Home, Me and This Army, Todd Chappelle, and Mean Lady. Woot!

How did we land such a sweeeeeeet gig?

Because we’re freakin’ Delaware’s premier acoustic punk-dork-rock power duo. That’s how.     (OK, really now.)

Because we were lucky enough to meet some big-wigs from the station (Josh T. Landow and Joey O) through our friend Rodney Anonymous. Among Mr. Anonymous’ many accomplishments and hobbies, Rodney also hosts a monthly industrial show on Y-Not Radio called Rodney Anonymous Tells You How To Live. A great conversation with Josh and Joey, a CD exchange, and an email or two later, and Hot Breakfast! is on the air telling the world about the vibrant music scene in Delaware! Ka-pow!

So… thanks, Rodney– we owe ya!

RADIO SHOW DEETS:

WHAT: Hot Breakfast! is the in-studio guest on Y-Not Radio‘s local music spotlight
WHO: Hot Breakfast! with host Josh T. Landow (and you’ll hear songs from our favorite locals, too!)
WHEN: Wednesday, 1/16 at 11:00AM and 10:00PM, and again on Saturday, 1/19 at 8PM
WHERE: Tune in online at ynotradio.net — the future of radio is riding on the backs of screaming electrons, baby!

Let us know what you think of the show!

Your pals,

Suburban Legend and Ji11
a.k.a. Matt and Jill

Hot Breakfast! Winter Blasto Email of Happiness (and Brevity)

Greetings, Hot Breakfast Compadres of ROCK, old and new!

If this is your first Hot Breakfast! newsletter – hey there! You are now officially part of the HB!COR, which stands for the Hot Breakfast! Compadres of ROCK.  It’s an elite group, and we are thrilled to have you on board.  Not to worry – we don’t send newsletters out very often; we respect your time as well as your inbox. And if you need to jump off the list, scroll to the bottom of this email to learn how, all with no hard feelings.

Anyhoo, at Kevin Regan’s request, we’re going to keep this blasto email short… otherwise he’ll make fun of us again. 🙂

Onward!

UPCOMING HB! SHOWS:

Sat Jan 12, 8pm:  Milkboy Coffee.  Our first show at Milkboy!  We’re super-excited about this show– it’s a prestigious gig, and we’re still pinching ourselves that we landed it.  As of right now, it looks like we’re the only band on the bill for that night, which means you get a full night of delicious, face-melting acoustic punk dork rock Hot Breakfast action!  And since we’re the only band on the bill, it’s up to us to pack the place.  Folks, this is the show to see in January– and we need your attractive selves there! Let’s show Milkboy that Hot Breakfast brings a crowd!  (Milkboy Coffee is located at 2 East Lancaster Ave, Ardmore, PA 19003.  Easily accessible by train, and there’s easy parking, too.  BYOB!)  You can find deets at our website here, or on Facebook here.  Please spread the word!

Sat Jan 19, 7:30pm (doors open at 7!): Delaware Friends of Folk Coffee House, Wesley College, Dover, DE. (With special guest, Trini.)  The Delaware Friends of Folk invited us to headline their wonderful monthly coffee house event.  It’s true, we’re not a folk band… and the good news is they’re not expecting us to act like one, either.  We cannot wait to melt some faces in Dover!  But since we’ve got a nice, long set to fill, we’ll be playing some of our deeper cuts and perhaps even a few slower tunes as well.  There is really something special about playing for a listening room.  More deets at our website here, or onFacebook here.  See you there!

Thurs Feb 14, 7:30pm: Comedy Night! with Todd Chappelle & Shari Short. World Cafe Live at the Queen, Wilmington DE.  This show pretty much sold out when we did this show in October, so we’re doing it again, but this time on Valentine’s Day!  Let’s be honest: Everyone hates having to come up with something creative and neat for Valentine’s Day, but we’ve solved the problem for you.  Take your posse to see the fabulous comedienne Shari Short, our favoritest comedy musician Todd Chappelle, and everyone’s dorktastic pals Hot Breakfast! for a Valentine’s Day night show… we promise we won’t make it awkward if you’re there with someone you’re not involved with.   At World Café Live at the Queen, 5th and Market Streets, Wilmington, DE. The show really does start at 7:30.  When you buy your tickets, don’t forget to also make a dinner reservation or you may not get a place to sit.

Sat Feb 16, 8-11PM: Hot Breakfast! at the Arts Quest Center, Bethlehem, PA.  We’ll have the whole night to ourselves, so you get three hours of Hot Breakfast! goodness in the Arts Quest Center’s Creativity Commons. There is so much to do in Bethlehem, from shopping, dining, galleries, and just walking around on a crisp night… and we’re excited to be playing in this beautiful space with wonderful acoustics and an even more wonderful view.  Spend an evening in Bethlehem, and while you’re there, come drop in for a set or two and a snack!  (101 Founders Way  Bethlehem, PA 18015)  No cover charge!

Fri Feb 22, 6:30 – 9PM:  Hot Breakfast! takes over The Young Bean!  Clayton, DE.  You southern Delawareans can’t gripe any longer that we don’t come down your way.  The Young Bean has truly magnificent coffee, the friendliest service ever, and the kindest regulars in the state.  Come on down and say hello… it’s a great way to unwind after a long workweek, and a really pretty drive, too!  They have comfy chairs.  You like comfy chairs.  There’s no cover charge… but you may be enticed by a piece of BACON CAKE.  It’s amazing.

NEWS:

We’re still in the studio…
We’ve had a few more sessions with the way-cool Ray Gagliardino as mix the tracks we’ve recorded at Studio 825 We are super-stoked with the way it’s coming together… we’ve got a new recording of “Hole in Your Pants,” and full-band versions of “Defender,” “39 Summers” and “Act Surprised.”  We still have some more tunes to record at Knappshack Studios (er, Ji11’s house), which is where we recorded  our self-titled EP, but we’re already talking about an album release date and party this spring. Still no idea what we’re calling this thing, but we promise it won’t be food-related or self-titled.  We’ll keep ya posted. 🙂

A video?  Sweet!
The weekend before the New Year it snowed around these parts (I am pointing to the parts) (not THOSE parts, you slob!), and our pal / local filmmaker Kevin Regan wrangled us to shoot the winter scenes for a video for our song, “An Idiot for Christmas.”  It’s a three-season video, so we had to shoot the snowy scenes right away, because with this whole global warming thing who’d know if we’d get another chance?  It was really fun, and we’re looking forward to the weather warming up so we can get some Beach Blanket Bingo-style shots in the summer and the leafy autumnal shots, too.  We’ll need extras!  So again, we’ll keep you posted.   (You may recognize Kevin Regan as the guy who shot The Joe Trainor Trio‘s sweeeeet video for Keeping Up The Pace. You may also recognize Kevin Regan as the guy who made fun of us for having email blastos that are too long.)

GET INVOLVED!

People ask us all the time how they can help support the band.  Here are eleven (11!) ideas, so take your pick:

  1. Come to a show!  Bring a friend!  Tell the bartender / manager / host(ess) that you’re there to see us.
  2. Like us on Facebook.  Promoters/booking agents gauge a band’s popularity (perhaps unfairly) on how many “likes” a bad has, so it’s time for us to get on the FB horse.  So, if you haven’t done so already, please give us a “Like” and encourage your friends to do so as well.  That’s a big help!  (Please note that there are a few groups/organizations called “Hot Breakfast” on Facebook.  Make sure you’re liking the right one!  Look for our picture, or go to facebook.com/HotBreakfastRocks  don’t forget the “Rocks.”
  3. Follow us on Twitter: We’re @hotbreakfast .
  4. If you know of any venues where you think we’d be welcome, let us know!  Email us here at awesomesauce@hot-breakfast.com. The name and location of the venue is necessary of course, and if you happen to know someone there, their name and contact info would be extra helpful.
  5. Forward this to a friend, or ask them to sign up for the mailing list.
  6. Buy an EP, and play it loudly. 🙂
  7. Share our videos with your friends on YouTube, or record and upload your own when you see us live. We love that. 🙂
  8. When you see a sign in front of a hotel that says “HOT BREAKFAST,” yell “Hot Breakfast!” really loudly and throw your fist in the air.  Bonus points if you take a picture of yourself this and post it on the internetz.  If you post it using Instagram, mention us!  We’re @hotbreakfast on instagram.
  9. Consider hosting a house concert.  We’ll come to your house and play for you and your pals… it’s a blast, and easier and less expensive than you think!  Email us here at awesomesauce@hot-breakfast.com and we’ll walk you through it.
  10. Visit our website to stay up to date on our latest shows.  We’re constantly adding new gigs, and that’s always the best place to see when and where we’re playing. Our calendar is on the right-hand side of our page.
  11. Just say hi after a show. 🙂

AND… THE DISMOUNT.

If you’ve gotten this far, thank you so much for reading. We admire your tenacity! 🙂  If you’d like to be removed from this list, no hard feelings.  Just hit Reply and type Unsubscribe in either the subject or the first line of the body of your email, and our trained robots will handle the rest.

Thank you again, so sincerely, for being a Compadre of ROCK.  We are so grateful to you for your support, your kindness, and your enthusiastic fist-pumps.  We really, really love you.

We hope your 2013 is treating you with the love and happiness your awesome self deserves.

In dorkitude,

GIG: MilkBoy Coffee (Ardmore, PA), Saturday January 12, 8PM

It's getting dorky in here.
It’s getting dorky in here.

We hope all of our fans, friends, family, and Cool Little Brothers n’ Sisters across the land had a wonderful New Year’s celebration. We certainly did – after booty-shaking to DJ Donna’s fantastic spins at Bellefonte Cafe, we hooked up with some great friends for drinks, foods, and very silly card games. We sincerely hope that 2013 treats you guys as well as 2012 treated us.

In fact, we’re hoping to help kick-start the year for ya with our first gig of the 2013, and it’s a doozy – we’re performing at MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore, Pennsylvania on Saturday, January 12th at 8:00. (Eeeeeee!) We’re really excited about this – we’ve been wanting to play at MilkBoy for quite a while, for it is super-cool, and rather prestigious, really. They’ve got wonderful food (they serve breakfast until 9 pm – that’s our kinda joint) and even wonderfuller coffee, and it’s just a great, laid-back, funky place to be. It’s also a BYOB establishment, and if you check out their website (link in the next paragraph) they’ll give you the scoop.

So if you’re in the Wilmington/Philly area and don’t mind spending time in swanky swanky Ardmore, come and help us ring in the new year, dork-rock style! The show starts at 8:00. There’s an $8 to $10 cover charge, but don’t worry – we’ll make sure we’re worth it. Plus, it won’t just be us! Keep an eye out here and on the MilkBoy website to see what other fabulous bands will be rockin’ yer socks on the 12th.

Hot coffee. Hot food. Hot Breakfast!

It’s gonna be a Hot New Year, yo.

Love,
The Suburban Legend

ps: There’s a train station right next door to Milkboy Coffee, so if you’re a public transit type person, this is pretty dang easy.
